How to awaken the Light? One method is to focus on the Light
unconditionally, without analyzing any pros or cons. You won’t miss
anything. You will feel full. Focus on the Light, day and night. Even when
you are not sitting down to meditate—while walking, working, wherever you
are, just focus on the Light. In the background of your mind, go on
remembering the Light. That memory should remain with you and keep you
inspired. It is not a meditation per se but at the back of your mind the
Lord is always there.
Light makes the darkness, the tamas, the drowsiness or laziness vanish. And
gradually you will become fearless. By fearless I don’t mean
bombastic—showing off. Please don’t do that. Fearlessness and joy go
together. There is happiness in human nature through freedom of the senses,
freedom in what to do and how to do it, but that is very transitory, very
limited. Real freedom and fearlessness come from the Light. Remembrance of
the Light should be there always. You may say, “I don’t see it.” Yes, that
is a problem, but that does not mean it is not there. Do not deny the
existence of Light in you or around you. That is a Western concept, I’m
sorry to say—what they don’t see doesn’t exist. They won’t say “I don’t see;
that’s my fault.”

The very question “Who am I?” implies I am trying to remember who I am, what
is my true self or true identity? Therefore, in your life, whatever you are
doing, keep remembrance of the Light. If you do that, when you sit down to
meditate your mind will automatically come to focus on the Light because you
have been doing it the whole day. Then when you are in meditation you are
alone with your Lord and enjoying it. Otherwise, if you don’t keep that
remembrance throughout the day, when you sit in meditation other thoughts
will disturb your enjoyment with the Lord.
O THAT IS ONE METHOD: FOCUS. Though that is
the answer, there are a few
other practices that you can do. Listen to or imbibe Satsang. Control your
diet so that you avoid certain foods if they do not agree with you, not only
health-wise but mind-wise; so that what you eat does not make you out of
balance, heavy or disturb your peace. We can choose foods that are of
sattvic nature: healthy, calming and elevating. The company you choose is
also very important. We sometimes fail to see the harm or good coming out of
associations. The mind or subconscious attracts or invites certain elements
and at that time we do not analyze the good or bad. We are attracted because
our mind or subconscious contains those elements. Therefore use
discrimination, not hating anyone but choosing to associate with those who
will enhance your upliftment. It may be that certain attachments, certain
relationships or things we have are so dear that they are not easy to let go
in order that good associations can develop; the mind will like to retain
these because we invite like a magnet the elements we have in our mind.
Therefore I believe that discrimination has to be applied, choosing who and
what will enhance and not degrade us.
