The idea is how to see everything as if for the first time. Because behind everything, whether it is food, the weather, your relationships, your circumstances, if you minutely judge you will find it is always you who you are concentrating upon. The “me” behind eating, the “me” behind meeting others, the “me” behind conducting other people’s affairs, the “me” behind possessiveness, the “me” behind charity, the “me” behind worship, the “me” behind meditation. The real cause of your dissatisfaction is “me,” which you are not seeing. Everything is “me.” And this “me” is not universal. This “me” behind everything is just a small Mickey Mouse!
“Me” preservation is a basic disease, ego preservation. If you can avoid this, you will always live a refreshed and renewed life. Through all vicissitudes, in whatever pattern of life you choose, see that “me” is not behind everything and you will see that that was the problem. If this were not true, why is it that you get fed up or miserable in spite of choosing how you want to live and doing what you want to do? You have freedom to choose your own life pattern, your values, and so on. Why are these not giving you a renewed, refreshed outlook to the extent that you always feel invigorated, happy and alive? How is it that with the river of life flowing all the time, we do not flow with that fresh current? Sometimes we may but not through everything. How is it that every time you sing or every time you meditate it is not a beautiful river flowing through you? Because you are holding and clutching that “me,” so how could you flow freely? You are tied up with “me” the great: “I have some position and responsibilities so I’m great!” The truly great ones do not get fed up with themselves.
