Simply following techniques eventually becomes repetitive and monotonous. It doesn’t give you joy. You may accomplish it very nicely but it is not creative. God’s creation is ever-changing every split second. Think of billions and billions of years and how many patterns must have formed—innumerable—and no two the same. This is called immortality. Anything that is limited or repetitive is mortal. Immortality is ever-new, ever-fresh spontaneity, untiring. To reach there you have to be very, very selfless in everything you do. Then you are qualified for divine life, not otherwise. The way is through you, by you, for you to come to that freedom, that boundlessness, infinity and eternity provided you are perfectly selfless.
True devotion is born out of selflessness. Therefore true love also. And without true devotion and love you cannot have ecstasy. Ecstasy is the climax of bliss. This is expressed through the movements of the Lord, called changefulness. When you are in tune with your Lord there is no misery. You realize that you and your God are one. You become the Creator. That divinity is within you. You have heard it, you have believed it, but you have never cared to invoke that God within you. You are so busy wanting this and that, holding on to this and that, running after this and that. The whole world is busy with this and that. God does not mind because he has no mind. He is so full, He has no need of a mind. When you come in tune with your Spirit you will also get freedom from your mind.
If you are trying to be free without invoking the Lord within you, it will not succeed. There is only one key and God has kept it with Him: when everything else fails, come to Him. In between, try your luck. Whatever you do, do it in a rhythmic and selfless way. We call it lila, divine play. It is God’s cosmic dance and drama. Come in that tune and you will play very nicely. No one has to teach you. If I am teaching you it is only because you are not selfless yet. The day you will be selfless, I will not teach you. I will simply impart to you. When you become selfless, God makes you see the Light. You may have read the story of Sri Ramakrishna. He put Vivekananda down on the ground and got on his bosom, and that bombastic Vivekananda said, “Lord, what are you doing? You’re a mad man.” The whole room and the walls were revolving and Ramakrishna told him, “I’ll show you the Light.” And Vivekananda said, “I’ve got my father and mother at home.” Then Ramakrishna released him, saying, “Okay, get up and go home. There are karmas yet.”

When that moment comes it brings up your false security. God is so merciful, He will not laugh at you. He will just vanish. And you lose both God and security because security is fictitious. Having our security, we are still insecure. Is there any security higher than God? Try to understand the inner value of selflessness, not just doing something for someone. That is not necessarily selflessness; it can be quite selfish. When you thoroughly understand the value of selflessness you are nearing God. To the degree you are selfish you miss God. Meditate selflessly and your mind will get purified. Love selflessly and your heart will get purified. Act selflessly and your senses will get purified. Grow into that. It will bring you to ecstasy.
Your soul wants to be free. Then only can you dance in ecstasy. If your feet are tied up, how can you dance? You have to be freed from selfishness, in your field, where you exist. Whatever you are doing, thinking and feeling, be selfless. In your loving, in your sleeping, eating, walking, working, be selfless. Do not think too much. Ecstasy is not for thinkers; it is for the God-intoxicated. This madness is born out of egolessness.
What you do is important but more important is your attitude, your inner feelings. God sees that. He knows what you mean, not what you say but what you are. We may try to explain, to justify our case, but there is no need to tell to God what He already knows. On the contrary, we must listen to what He tells us. In order to listen we must be silent. Be still and know. Knowledge is not born in language or thinking; it is born in silence. When your mind is still, the Light shines. Then you will see the whole cosmic dance—how it moves, creates and dissolves; how every split second it changes patterns, colors and sounds. At that moment you are freedom and bliss—satchidananda.
