Wherever there is peace, God exists. If we want to hear His voice, the inner voice, the true Self, Consciousness, then we need to relax. The inmost Reality is known by being still. We have to first come to peace of mind, then the voice of God, the vision of God, the Reality, Consciousness will emerge. Light is everywhere but we do not see it everywhere; it has to be seen within first. As long as our minds are beset with many things—thoughts, impositions, desires, likes and dislikes, our cherished perceptions, our habituated and conditioned ideas—having peace, seeing Reality will remain a dream. And without knowing Reality, without knowing the Truth within, touching the Spirit, life will always be superficial; we will never have full satisfaction or deeper fulfillment. We cannot touch that Reality unless our minds are peaceful. And our minds cannot be peaceful on our own terms.
What would be the most universal terms for peace among all religions and nations as well as in our own experience? Be truthful. Be harmless. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Just two or three things. If you are harmless you will not be competitive and jealous; you will not be prejudiced; you will not be negative or weird. If you are truthful you will not deceive; you will not cheat; you will not supersede or dominate over others. You will hate no one and harm no one. You will not be selfish or self-gratifying. Those who are truthful are courageous and bold. They live and let live. Truth makes you powerful, not in a mundane way; it makes you more energetic. It is by Truth that we exist.

These two or three virtues make the mind relaxed and peaceful, and automatically you will develop devotion for the Lord; you will remember God more. With a disturbed, restless, agitated mind, if someone tells you, “Just repeat the holy name of God,” you say “Not now; I’m not in peace at the moment.” When our minds are busy with our own things, whatever they are, we have our own logic. Mind wants to lose itself in various things rather than in Him. With a peaceful mind you love the Lord; you remember Him very well. Natural questions arise: Who am I? What is Reality? What is this universe all about? What is the reason for my existence? Otherwise we are beset with food, shelter, clothing, insurance, medication, telephone and TV. And the further we are from the Reality and God, the more the miseries, pain, disease, worries and afflictions. The greater the distance from the sun, the cooler the planet.
We have to avoid complexity of mind: saying one thing and doing another; thinking both truth and untruth and the next moment denying what we said. These things are a modern epidemic, I am sorry to say. Even with all the current day scientific and medical discoveries, we still have to see where we are faltering. We have yet to understand the true meaning of freedom: freedom of the soul, freedom of being, freedom of existence, freedom of the Spirit. If we understand this, there will be no clashes because everyone has a soul. We differ in minds, not in the Spirit. My freedom of thinking may be your bondage. Your freedom of thinking might hurt me. Therefore I do not believe in freedom of man per se, because that is very limited. If we could think of the soul, the Spirit, the Light within, Consciousness, God within, we do not differ in that. Therefore there is unity in the Reality.
