Where you have become erroneously serious has created paranoia, mania,
melancholy, depression, quarrels, clashes, misunderstandings, regrets, ad infinitum.
All major illnesses of the mind are due to this: getting serious about something we
should not be serious about in the first place.

You might wonder why in the Golden Age there is only seventy-five percent truth rather than a hundred percent? According to the past Golden Age, which Vedic sages have calculated as at least 10,000 years ago, when you come to ultimate truth or one hundred percent truth, this world totally loses its meaning. The creation ends. You cannot exist as you exist now. It will be not only Liberation but the creation itself will vanish. If there were only light everywhere, no darkness, no shadows, creation would end. Therefore some minimum opposition to the light has to be there, a negative-positive force, to keep the creation existing. But when truth tumbles down, the balance is lost more and more and miseries increase. Therefore holy people always suggest that in order to maintain the balance and harmony in life, you have to be on truth to a certain extent. Not that you can be totally on truth. If you were, you would be Enlightened.
We have to understand the inner working of the creation, the negative and positive poles. When you use philosophical terms it sounds different than when you use scientific or mathematical terms, but the phenomenon is the same. As long as you are keeping the balance, you will see that seriousness over transitory things is more of a hindrance or obstacle to your own achievements. We miss the very joy we seek by being serious about things where we shouldn’t be. Sages have called this self-delusion. It is not that God created delusion or illusion to mystify or deceive us. It is self-delusion. Just pay attention to what needs your attention but don’t take it too seriously. This maintains the freshness and newness of life.

It is not a matter of training your mind to detach from here and concentrate there; it is not a mental struggle at all. It is a common sense attitude that automatically frees your mind to pursue the highest, whatever goal you choose in your own mind and heart. Some would say peace or happiness or wisdom. Some might say Enlightenment or Liberation. Some may say, “I just want to be a good person.” Whichever way you put it, just bring your mind out of seriousness about side issues and see how sensibly your brain develops. Where you have become erroneously serious has created paranoia, mania, melancholy, depression, quarrels, clashes, misunderstandings, regrets, ad infinitum. What is a mania, actually? It is when you are stuck in something and your mind is revolving round and round. What is depression? Again, it is where your mind is stuck in a rut, going round and round. Psychologists and dictionaries might define it differently but this is the way I would see it. What is paranoia? Going round and round with the same thoughts or fears. All major illnesses of the mind are due to this: getting serious about something we should not be serious about in the first place.
