Self-realization is an unfolding process. It is not achieved through understanding or thinking but by becoming. As the mind becomes more silent, questions naturally arise: Who am I? What is God? What is the meaning of life? This is the genesis of spirituality.
FEATURED IN THIS ISSUE
I came to Buddhist meditation practice in 1988. I was seventeen years old and at the time I was sitting in a jail cell in juvenile hall. Up to that point I had spent my youth chasing pleasure through drugs, crime, violence, trying to escape the painful inner world that I was experiencing. My introduction to meditation came through a phone call with my father, Stephen Levine, who is a meditation teacher. He said, “Maybe you want to try meditation.” I was desperate enough at the time to say, “Sure, I’ll try anything. Even something that doesn’t make sense to me like meditation.”
Over the years I’ve come to feel that one of the most valuable things we can learn as human beings is to be open and receptive to the space that is presented to us all the time: of no resolution, of an open, expectant, not-knowing mind. It is a space of letting the mind not know and not having to say yes or no, right or wrong, this way or that way—just open.
Among the most serious of these acts of violence against nature is the destruction of the sacred seed. The destruction of natural seeds is a spiritual matter, not merely an economic, political, or agricultural issue. There are profound spiritual implications to what we are doing to our seeds, which are, after all, the very source of our survival.
